Badam Nut – The Exotic Natural Cave
Rustic aesthetics and a perfect retreat for shrimp and fish!
Bring a piece of tropical nature into your aquarium! The Badam nut is the dried fruit shell of the Indian almond tree (Terminalia catappa), which is mainly native to Southeast Asia. These wooden natural caves are extremely popular in aquascaping due to their distinctive shape and their positive properties for the water.
The benefits of the Badam nut at a glance:
- Unique look for aquascapes: With its thick, woody shell and deeply furrowed structure, the Badam nut looks like a small, weathered piece of driftwood. It blends perfectly into natural layouts and provides a beautiful contrast to green plants and light substrate.
- Versatile hiding place: Inside, the nut offers a sheltered cavity. It is therefore not only a paradise for shrimp, but also an excellent spawning cave or retreat for small to medium-sized fish (e.g., dwarf cichlids or kuhli loaches).
- Natural water care: Similar to Indian almond leaves, the Badam nut releases valuable tannins and humic substances into the water. These promote the vitality of your inhabitants, have a slightly antibacterial effect, and can gently stabilize the pH value.
- Durable feeding spot: The shell serves as an ideal substrate for biofilms. Shrimp and grazers use the nut for hours as a natural pasture.
Integration into your aquascape:
The Badam nut can be wonderfully placed as a central element in a "sheltered corner" or at the base of roots. It looks particularly natural if you group several nuts of different sizes. Pro tip: You can tie or glue moss (e.g., Java or Flame moss) directly onto the rough shell to create a "green cave."
Preparation:
Since it is a very light and dry natural product, the Badam nut will initially float. We recommend briefly boiling the nut before placing it in the aquarium or pre-soaking it in a separate container for a few days until it sinks on its own.
