Every aquarist knows the phenomenon: After some time, an unsightly, oily film forms on the water surface – the so-called pellicle. Not only does it look unappealing, but it also hinders the vital gas exchange between water and air.
The solution to this problem is a surface skimmer. However, while it keeps the surface crystal clear, it poses an often underestimated danger to the smallest inhabitants of the aquarium. In this article, you will learn how a skimmer works and how you can make it absolutely safe with ShrimpPuddle upgrades.
What is a skimmer and what does it do?
A skimmer is a small internal filter or an attachment for the filter inlet that sucks water directly from the surface.
The advantages at a glance:
- Pellicle removal: Bacteria, dust, and proteins are effectively skimmed off. The water immediately appears more brilliant.
- Optimized gas exchange: Since the pellicle acts as a barrier, a skimmer ensures that more oxygen enters the water and CO2 can escape more easily.
- Clean appearance: Floating plant parts or food residues on the surface are drawn in before they can sink to the bottom and decompose there.
The downside: Danger to shrimp and nano fish
The operating principle of a skimmer is based on a floating inlet comb that adapts to the water level. This is exactly where the problem lies for invertebrates:
- The suction effect: Since the slits in the inlet comb are often quite wide, curious shrimp or small fish (such as young celestial pearl danios) are simply sucked in.
- No escape: Once trapped inside the skimmer, the animals end up in the filter sponge or directly in the impeller (the rotor) of the pump. For baby shrimp, this excursion almost always ends fatally.
Many aquarists therefore reluctantly do without a skimmer to avoid jeopardizing their breeding success.
The solution: ShrimpPuddle upgrades for maximum safety
At ShrimpPuddle, we believe that you shouldn't have to choose between clear water and the safety of your animals. That's why we have developed special upgrade parts that quickly make common skimmer models (such as the Oase CrystalSkim) "shrimp-proof."
ShrimpPuddle Skimmer Upgrades
Why our upgrades make the difference:
- Fine-mesh protection: Our attachments narrow the inlet slits so precisely that even the smallest baby shrimp can no longer be sucked in.
- Function preservation: The design is optimized so that the pellicle continues to be reliably removed without the skimmer losing performance or drawing air.
- Perfect fit: The upgrades are simply slipped onto the original floating body – no gluing, no fiddling with coarse sponges that immediately clog.
- Safe material: Like all our products, the skimmer protective grids are made of high-quality, food-safe plastic that does not release harmful substances into the water.
Conclusion: Safety first
A skimmer is a fantastic tool for a healthy aquarium environment but should never be operated "naked" in an invertebrate tank. With a ShrimpPuddle skimmer protector, you combine the best of both worlds: a mirror-smooth water surface and the certainty that your precious shrimp offspring are safe.
